" In the Far East, the search for exoticism took an outright turn toward the burlesque. In her essay "Visual Responses:Depicting Europeans in East Asia", Jackson quotes some lines written in 1639 by an anonymous Japanese wag:

A southern Barbarian trading vessel came to our shores. From this ship emerged an unnamable creature, somewhat similar in shape to a human creature but looking more like a long-nosed goblin

Japanese artists transcribed with alacrity this vision of long-nosed goblins. On a 17th century lacquer box, beaming Portuguese men with enormous noses and exaggeratedly baggy trousers smile vaguely , like clowns in a pantomine.
