NOTAS SOBRE AS FORMAS ANTIGAS DE SENSIBILIDADE: O CONFLITO ENTRE O AMOR E O DESEJO

No comentário ao Ájax de Sófocles, continuarei a falar das formas antigas de sensibilidade associadas à honra, à igualdade nas armas, aos juramentos, aos deveres da amizade. Enquanto não avanço mais nesse comentário, fica aqui como intermezzo e para a antologia destas coisas arqueológicas, um poema de D. H. Lawrence sobre o conflito entre o desejo e o amor romântico. O desejo é mais antigo, mas “It has always been a failure” nos tempos de hoje.

Ah, in the past, toward rare individuals
I have felt the pull of desire;
Oh come, come nearer, come into touch:
Come physically nearer, be flesh to my flesh -

But say little, oh say little,
and afterwards, leave me alone.
Keep your aloneness, leave me my aloneness -
I used to say this, in the past - but now no more
It has always been a failure.
They have always insisted on love
and on talking about it
and on the me and thee and what we meant to each other.

So now I have no desire any more
Except to be left, in the last resort, alone, quite alone.
